London Stadium Seals Stadium Of The Year Award

London Stadium has been named Stadium DB’s Stadium of the Year for 2016, beating competition from 28 venues across the globe.

The venue on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park sealed the juror’s vote, receiving plaudits for innovation and visual impact, while being commended for its conversion following the conclusion of the London Olympics in 2012.

London Stadium is now home to West Ham United in the Premier League and World Athletics, as well as host to concert events, rugby league and union, and enjoyed a breakthrough 2016 which saw AC/DC become the first act to headline the venue, and the Hammers bring in this season with a showpiece fixture against Juventus.

“Although the conversion has taken some time, this is an excellent case study for adaptation of an Olympic legacy facility,” said Robert Mankin of architecture firm NBBJ, who sat on the panel.

“The final result feels fresh and new, and the integration into the surrounding park is quite well done.”

“Super-light cover structure, smart incorporation of floodlighting and flexibility make it a spectacular masterpiece of engineering,” added STOPROCENT Architekci representative Przemek Kaczkowski.

The Vodafone Arena, home to Besiktas, sealed second place in the jurors’ vote.
