Relive Last Season: August

Ahead of the return of Premier League football to London Stadium next week, we’re looking back at West Ham United’s first season with us, month-by-month.

West Ham began their London Stadium tenure against NK Domzale, in the third round of the Europa League qualifying.

Four years to the day since Team GB celebrated Super Saturday at the very same venue, Cheikhou Kouyate scored the first goal at London Stadium, before adding a second inside 17 first half minutes.

Sofiane Feghouli added West Ham’s third to rubber stamp victory in their first match at London Stadium.

Three days later, the Hammers contested the Betway Cup with Italian giants Juventus. To no shortage of fanfare, London Stadium looked resplendent for its official opening.

The star-studded visitors reached a 2-0 lead through Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic, before an Andy Carroll double brought the Hammers level. Simone Zaza hit the decisive winner for Juventus.

Bournemouth provided West Ham United’s first Premier League opposition at London Stadium on Sunday 21 August.

Michail Antonio scored a late winner to hand victory to the Hammers, his header the first Premier League goal at London Stadium, after netting the final West Ham goal at Upton Park.

August ended with disappointment for the Hammers, though, as they were shocked by Astra Giurgiu in the playoff round for the Europa League.

Filipe Teixeira put the visitors in front after a swift counter attack, and despite efforts from Jonathan Calleri, Winston Reid and Ashley Fletcher, Astra Giurgiu held on to progress.
